TriBeCa - Filippo Pompili Photo In the colonial period the Dutch used it for farms then in the early 1700s Queen Anne donated it to Trinity Church and about a hundred years later it was used as a park, St. John’s Park. In 1883 a fruit and vegetable market called Bear Market was opened. Meanwhile, the area developed as a residential area until the 1840s when the growth of lower Manhattan also attracted commercial investors. In the 1880s warehouses began to spread for the exchange of goods for the nearby market, later called Washington Market. In the 1960s the market was moved to the Bronx and the area, after a period of decline, began a transformation with the construction of new buildings and the transformation of old warehouses into residential lofts.
After the attack of September 11, 2001, the neighborhood suffered some degradation but thanks to the initiatives of the neighborhood committees, the area has returned to be pleasant and lively. The area has also attracted famous people such as Robert De Niro, who opened his own restaurant here, and the film production company TriBeCa Film, which has been running the TriBeCa Film Festival every year since 2002. Other well-known people who live or have lived in TriBeCa are Anastacia, Beyoncé, Jessica Biel, Mariah Carey, Daniel Craig, Billy Crystal, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jay-Z, Scarlett Johansson, Harvey Keitel, John F. Kennedy Jr., David Letterman, Gwyneth Paltrow, Mike Piazza, Daniel Radcliffe, Lou Reed, Meryl Streep, Taylor Swift, Uma Thurman, Justin Timberlake, Christy Turlington, Kate Winslet.
