The Tibet House US was founded in 1987 at the request of the Dalai Lama, Columbia University professor Robert Thurman, actor Richard Gere and composer Philip Glass.
The Dalai Lama who attended the inauguration declared that this cultural institution would help preserve the culture of Tibet. The institution presents Tibetan civilization and its desire for a world of free peoples and is part of a worldwide network of Tibetan institutions committed to ensuring that the Tibetan spirit never disappears from the face of the earth.
