Founded in 1904 when Judge Mayer Sulzberger donated 26 ceremonial objects to the Jewish Theological Seminary as the nucleus of a museum collection, it was the first institution of its kind in the United States and today one of the oldest Jewish museums in the world. Over the years it has grown considerably and today its collection includes almost 30,000 objects ranging from archaeological finds to works by contemporary artists covering a historical period of over 4,000 years.
In 1944, Frieda Schiff Warburg, widow of the famous businessman and philanthropist Felix Warburg, a seminary trustee, donated the family home on Fifth Avenue to convert it into a museum. The villa designed in the French Gothic style by architect Charles P.H. Gilbert, was completed in 1908 and became the museum since 1947.
