Its origins date back to 1910 when this garden was created as part of the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences under the direction of botanist Charles Stuart Gager who held this position for over 30 years.
The garden covers an area of 21 hectares where there are more than 14,000 plants distributed in various gardens. One of the most beautiful is the Japanese Hill-and-Pond Garden, one of the oldest Japanese gardens in the country that extends over a small hill that surrounds a pond where from April to May there is the spectacular flowering of the cherry trees. Then there is the Cranford Rose Garden, opened in 1928, with its over a thousand species of roses is one of the largest collections in North America. The Daffodil Hill where from late March and early April thousands of yellow daffodils invade the lawn of the hill adjacent to the Magnolia Plaza, the Fragrance Garden, created in 1955 was one of the first gardens designed for the blind and the Herb Garden with medicinal and aromatic herbs, vegetables, berries, fruit trees and flowers. And again the aquatic plants of the Lily Pool Terracee and Water Garden, the flowers and plants of Rock Garden, Osborne Garden and Shakespeare Garden.
Finally, there are five greenhouses: Aquatic House and Orchid Collection, C.V. Starr Bonsai Museum, Desert Pavilion, Tropical Pavilion, Warm Temperate Pavilion.
