The museum was founded in 1997 by Leonard Garment, advisor to two U.S. presidents, Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford, and a skilled jazz saxophonist, Abraham D. Sofaer, a former U.S. district judge, with the aim of preserving and promoting jazz music. In addition to the audio and video collection, the museum organizes live performances, temporary exhibitions and educational programs.
In August 2010, approximately 1,000 records of recorded radio broadcasts produced by audio engineer William Savory in the 1930s were purchased with musicians such as Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday and Benny Goodman.
