Part of The Metropolitan Museum, it opened on March 18, 2016 with the former Whitney Museum of American Art, which moved to the Meatpacking District in a new building designed by Renzo Piano, which was built in 1966 on a project by the architect Marcel Breuer, a leading figure in the Bauhaus and modern movement. His collection is dedicated to modern and contemporary art with works from the 20th and 21st centuries.
