The Japan Society is a not-for-profit corporation founded on May 19, 1907 when little was known about Japan in the United States. Its goal is to promote cultural exchange between the two countries through programs in the arts and culture, commerce, language and education.
The current building was designed by architect Junzo Yoshimura with a style that blends classic elegance with simplicity. In 1998 the structure underwent a substantial renovation, but has retained the original vision of Yoshimura. Inside there is a 262-seat theater where classic and contemporary Japanese films and educational programs are shown, an art gallery, a language center, a library and conference rooms.
