Founded in 1969 by artist and educator Raphael Montañez Ortiz and a group of parents, educators, artists and activists to support Latin artists largely ignored by other museums.
Its mission is to present and preserve Puerto Rican, Latin American and Caribbean art and culture through a permanent collection, exhibitions, bilingual public programs, educational activities, festivals and special events. Its diverse permanent collection of over 6,500 objects covering over 800 years includes pre-Columbian Taino artifacts, the first American population to populate the Caribbean, traditional arts, 20th century drawings, paintings, sculptures and installations, as well as prints, photographs and video documents.
